FLEXIBLE TO YOUR LIFESTYLE

Hearing aid ga
Hearing aids are used to rehabilitate hearing loss and to make speech more intelligible. They vary in style and technical sophistication to suit the type or degree of hearing loss in addition to the lifestyle and needs of the wearer.
In many instances hearing aids may be used to alleviate or control distressing head noise (tinnitus). Hearing aid amplification may effectively mask out (keep the wearer from hearing) the tinnitus.

HEARING INFORMATION

Often, those who suffer from hearing loss experience the symptoms without knowing how it all works.  At Coastal Hearing & Balance, we feel knowledge is an important tool.  The below information will help you to understand more about the mysterious art of hearing.

HOW DO WE HEAR?

Sound travels through the ear canal, creating vibrations of the ear drum (tympanic membrane). These vibrations are transmitted through the bones related to hearing (the ossicles – hammer, anvil and stirrup) into the inner ear (cochlea). In the cochlea, these mechanical vibrations (energy) are converted into electrical energy and conducted via nerve impulses to the brain, which interprets them as recognisable sounds. Simple, right?

HOW COMMON IS HEARING LOSS?

It is estimateed 2.8 million suffer from some degree of hearing impairment. Over the next 25 years it is estimated that this figure will grow to 4.9 million. There are two basic categories of hearing loss:

CONDUCTIVE HEARING LOSS
Conductive hearing loss is caused by disease/malformation of the ear drum and/or bones of hearing, causing a loss of sound conduction to the inner ear.
This type of hearing loss is often surgically correctable or readily rehabilitated with a hearing aid.

SENSORINEURAL HEARING LOSS
Sensorineural hearing loss is caused by nerve damage. This is the most common form of hearing loss and is the type that generally affects either the elderly or those born with deafness. When sensorineural hearing loss is affecting an individual’s lifestyle and ability to function at work, they may be a candidate for hearing aids. If hearing worsens, the individual may require a bionic ear or Cochlear implant.

OVERCOMING A LOSS OF HEARING

Overcoming a loss of hearing is possible… With the right treatment and of course a little help from your family and friends.

Suffering from loss of hearing can have a significant impact on your work and social life.  When the hearing loss is mild and not significant enough to require surgery or hearing aids, sometimes all that is required is a little bit of help from your friends and family in understanding your hearing loss and learning how they should best communicate with you.

Regardless of the cause, loss of hearing or hearing impairment can be an isolating problem and people are usually unaware that help is easily available. A call to Coastal Hearing & Balance can help you quickly discover the difference a hearing aid can make to your quality of life.  Hearing aids are, quite simply, electronic sound amplification devices that help people with hearing loss to hear clearly again.

At Coastal Hearing & Balance, we offer a wide range of the latest automatic digital hearing aids; and since we are not affiliated with any one brand, we are able to prescribe, fit and repair a wide range of hearing aids including, but not limited to, Oticon, Siemens, Phonak, GN Resound and Unitron. All of our hearing aids come with the peace of mind of a no-obligation six-week trial period.

Many satisfied clients have been fitted with hearing aids at Coastal Hearing & Balance. Our staff have the experience and expertise to ensure you receive the best advice and care.

SINGLE-SIDED DEAFNESS

Single-sided deafness is a special case of deafness that often goes unrecognised. Hearing loss in one ear may happen following an ear infection, head trauma, ear tumours, blockage of the ear artery, pressure build up in the ear; or for unknown reasons.

One-sided hearing loss causes a loss of stereophonic sound and the inability to determine where the direction of sound is coming from. Furthermore, a patient with single-sided hearing loss has a lot of trouble hearing when there is background noise and during social situations.
Treatment options of single-sided hearing loss include:

CROS
The CROS hearing aid receives sound on the deaf side and then, via either wired or wireless technology, sends the sound to the good ear (which is fitted with a hearing aid).
